3. History of the Outer Banks Seafood Festival
The Outer Banks Seafood Festival is a celebration organized to honor the local fishing heritage. Years ago, the Outer Banks community held ‘The Wanchese Seafood Festival’ as a celebration of the seafood industry and the village which was developed to provide the market with the freshest fresh seafood.
In September of each year, Hatteras Village has a ‘Day at the Docks’ on its seaside which means celebrating the old traditions of the seafood industry. This event includes demonstrations of seafood preparations, displays of fishing boats and gear, fishing industry skills contests and competitions, local seafood cooking competitions, music, author readings, a chowder cook-off contest, activities for children and concludes with a Blessing of the Fleet.
The Outer Banks Seafood Festival was born as a result of an innovative idea to bring back that historical heritage to the present so the visitors and locals can have fun alike while learning about the local culture.
