Recycle Materials
Please note the Resource Recovery Sites located around the Arcata Plaza. They feature the latest in waste diversion to enhance the sustainability of the festival. At each station there will be clearly labeled receptacles for recyclables - which include beer cups, bottles, cans, and cardboard; for compostable materials — which include napkins, wax cups, coffee cups, food boats and food scraps; for trash- this includes plastic bags, straws, lids, forks and last but not least: the oyster shells.
Mad River Hatchery: Raising Steelhead, Salmon and Trout
The Mad River Hatchery will take the shells to their facility in Arcata where the recovered shells will sit for a year in the sun before being incorporated into their eight beds. The shells are important for filtering the water and providing a surface for the nitrifying beneficial bacteria to grow on. They are presently the only hatchery in California to use this ideal reclamation method also involving wells and discharging water into settling ponds to keep the river free of excess nitrogen. The Mad River Hatchery would like to extend its support to the folks attending Oyster Festival for being consciences to reuse our precious natural resources and help keep our shells out of the landfills.
